Make a unique curve-shaped box using one of the most versatile tools in the wood shop: the bandsaw.
We'll start by reviewing bandsaw basics: machine safety and operation, followed by hands-on practice cutting wide and tight curves. Next you'll cut out your own bandsaw box, using a template applied to a block of wood. Subsequent steps include cutting out the drawer, sanding and smoothing the various parts, glueing up the pieces in proper order, dealing with “mistakes”, and finally discussing finishes that can be applied. This class consists of two sessions a day apart. If there is time, you will start a second box using a provided template or guidance on how to create your own design.
Some prior experience with the bandsaw is required.
ABOUT DUANE: Duane enjoys making sawdust, from fine powder to curly shavings to chunky wood chips. In doing so, creative and interesting wood objects often materialize! Growing up on a dairy farm, he learned to bang nails and cut wood at an early age. Ten years ago, with time on his hands after retiring from a career in adult education, and inspired by a curved-frame mirror he purchased in Costa Rica, he began a more serious wood-working practice. Since then he has spent thousands of hours making bandsaw boxes, serving boards, artwork frames, wood sculptures, furniture and other items. He has led this class several times in Vermont and is looking forward to conducting it at the Joinery. Duane lives in Greenfield, MA.
