Woodworking Basics: Spiral Trivet
One of the most common uses for the bandsaw is cutting curves. Learn how to safely operate this basic woodshop machine while making a unique project with a clever spiral design. The pieces can be interlocked together as one trivet, or used separately as three!
We'll start with the basics: machine safety, operation, and hands-on practice cutting wide and tight curves. Next you'll work on your trivet by applying a template to a 7”x9” piece of wood and cutting out the individual parts on the bandsaw. Then you’ll learn how to smooth the edges using sandpaper, hand tools and the spindle sander, and finally finish up by applying a protective coat of mineral oil.

No prior experience with the bandsaw is necessary.

ABOUT DUANE: Duane enjoys making sawdust, from fine powder to curly shavings to chunky wood chips. In doing so, creative and interesting wood objects often materialize! Growing up on a dairy farm, he learned to bang nails and cut wood at an early age. Ten years ago, with time on his hands after retiring from a career in adult education, and inspired by a curved-frame mirror he purchased in Costa Rica, he began a more serious wood-working practice. Since then he has spent thousands of hours making bandsaw boxes, serving boards, artwork frames, wood sculptures, furniture and other items. He has led this class several times in Vermont and is looking forward to conducting it at the Joinery. Duane lives in Greenfield, MA.
