Frame it Yourself: DIY Frames for Artists

Upgrade your 2-D artwork with custom-built, gallery-quality frames—without breaking the bank. This four-part, hands-on workshop series is designed for artists seeking affordable, DIY framing solutions. Focused on float frames, but applicable to other types, the course covers accessible techniques using both power and hand tools. Participants will leave with a professionally finished frame and the skills to continue framing independently.
What to Expect:
- Session 1: Framing Basics & Construction Methods
Get hands-on with three approachable float frame construction techniques, including two using shop power tools (table saw, miter saw, router) and one using only pre-cut wood, glue, and clamps. Learn which methods best fit your needs, budget, and available tools. - Session 2: Miter Cuts & Frame Assembly
With your frame pieces pre-glued, you’ll return to cut precise 45° angles using various tools—from power saws to affordable hand tools. Learn how to assemble your frame squarely and securely with guided glue-up and clamping techniques. - Session 3: Reinforcing Corners with Splines
Strengthen your frame’s joints with decorative wood splines. Use a jig and table saw to cut spline slots, then glue in pre-cut splines. Alternate reinforcement methods (like stapling) will also be demonstrated for future framing flexibility. - Session 4: Finishing & Feedback
Wrap up your frame with supervised sanding and hand-cutting of splines. Meet one-on-one with staff to discuss your experience, complete a short evaluation, and leave with both a finished frame and the knowledge to build more on your own.
Participants will be asked to pay a small fee of $25 as an acknowledgement they are committed to taking the class. These funds will go toward the initial shop rental space fee at the Joinery.
