Intro to Woodturning: Small Serving Tray

Discover the art and satisfaction of woodturning in this hands-on class designed for beginners and intermediate turners alike. Under the expert guidance of instructor John Kingsley, you'll learn how to safely use a lathe and turning tools to shape, smooth, and finish your very own small cheese or serving tray.

John will walk you through each step of the process—from selecting and mounting your wood blank to mastering tool control and adding finishing touches that bring out the natural beauty of the grain. Along the way, you’ll pick up helpful tips, tricks, and techniques you can carry into future turning projects.

All tools and materials are provided, and no prior experience is necessary.

Tools Used: Wood lathe and turning tools
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Ages: 14+. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Teacher: John Kingsley

John has over 40 years of hands-on experience in woodworking, from furniture making and restoration, to functional and ornamental turnings. He has been teaching the art of woodturning for over a decade. He holds a leadership role with the Northeastern Woodworking Association and serves as a board member for the Adirondack Woodturners Association. John is also a member of the International Association of Penturners and the American Association of Woodturners. His work is featured in private collections throughout the region.
