Skills Intensive: Furniture Design Through Scale Models

This is a three-session class. Please ensure all dates and times work for you prior to registering.

Plan your next woodworking project under the guidance of Master Furniture Maker Aurelio Bolognesi.

In this three-day intensive course, students will come with a furniture project in mind -- cabinet, dresser, table, etc. Anything you're interested in building but are stuck on where to start. The goal for this class is for students to leave with a project model and a clear vision for their piece and how to construct it.

Day One - Planning:
Each student will work with Aurelio and their classmates to sketch their project idea. Aurelio will guide you through the initial design process with suggestions, but without influencing you in taste or style. Students will discuss with each other and brainstorm about each piece, paying close attention to each other's projects and approaching this experience with a collaborative spirit. This discussion may lead to alterations in the project -- ideally each student will have two turns to sketch and present their idea to the full group.

Day Two - Building a Model:
Using a bandsaw or scroll saw, students will begin to construct a small model for their piece. As the models begin to take shape, the true shape of each project will emerge and adjustments can be made under Aurelio's guidance.

Day Three - Completing the Model:
On day three, students will complete their project models. Particularly complex or unusual joints will be tried as well if there is time.

This class is about finishing a project model that meets each student's expectations. Flexibility is encouraged and students are encouraged to start over or completely change direction if they so choose.
